Reading 14: "I'm Your Horse in the Night"

"I'm Your Horse in the Night" by Luisa Valenzuela is very emotional, but in the context of depth created in such a short passage of text. The feeling of joy when Chiquita is in her lover's arms is very evident, but so is the loss that she feels when she wakes up and discovers that was a dream. In that sense, the words are saturated with feeling, both good and bad. The metaphor used, of being someone's horse in the night, also fits seamlessly with the story. The dream being similar to the trance that the main character describes while hearing the song makes the tale that much more sad because she can only be with the one she loves in her dreams. I think the author successfully threads the story and meaning together to create more sentiment, and draw the reader in by appealing to their emotion.
