Reading 11: "One Arm"

"One Arm" by Yasunari Kawabata caught me off guard. I found this story quite strange, but in an oddly appealing way. It holds a mysterious air about it, with a noir like essence written into the words. The relationship that the main character develops with the arm, an inanimate object, is interesting. The arm itself has a personality given to it. Of course it has some of the characteristics of its owner, but it also is distinctly different as well. I found this story intriguing because of the relationship developed between the protagonist and the arm, but also the dialogue and descriptions. The author completely captures the intrinsic nature of the night, but also the meaning and weight that we give to objects. This was a very compelling read.
