Reading 4: "Jacklighting"
"Jacklighting" by Ann Beattie was thoughtful and real. The past memories and present life intertwine in a heartbreaking dance surrounding the loss of a loved one. The descriptions of past Nicholas, as well as memories associated with him, are full of life and observation, while the present lives of those left in the wake of his death seem dulled with visible cracks across their surface. I think this story showcases how certain days and holidays can be harder than others. Life continues to be lived, but that doesn't mean people completely disappear from our thoughts and minds, especially on birthdays. I am curious as to who exactly the narrator is; a friend, a family member, an old flame. This story, one of remembrance and loss, feels heavy to me because it contains a farewell that may never be said and a life never fully lived.
Good analyses here. What do you make of the title "Jacklighting?"
